Waiting with Hope
“Waiting with hope is very difficult, but true patience is expressed when we must even wait for hope. I will have reached the point of greatest strength once I have learned to wait for hope.”
- George Matheson
Waiting to feel hope. I think some of the darkest, loneliest times in my life are when I am waiting to feel hopeful again. There are days when I sit, feeling exhausted, and wonder if I will ever regain a sense of belief in what the future holds. This quote brings me a subtle, yet perplexing comfort when George Matheson writes, “I will have reached the point of greatest strength once I have learned to wait for hope.” It reminds me that in these dark places when I feel my weakest, there is a strength lying deeper still. Just by waiting and doing the next thing in front of me, I am strong. My strength doesn’t need to look like others’; it is unique to my situation.
If you are waiting today - waiting to remember what hope and love and joy feel like once again - you are not alone. We never truly know what those around us are experiencing, even those closest to us. And you are not weak or failing because you are in this season. Quite the opposite. You are strong in these moments even if it doesn’t feel like a reality right now. With every step you take, you are demonstrating an internal belief that hope will rise again. So today, I invite you to just be present. In this season of waiting, you are strong and you are enough.
