I Am Growing
“So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth.” ~ 1 Corinthians 3:7 (NASB)
Growth is a fascinating concept. When I think about growth, I immediately picture sprouting and blooming plants - the hue of flowers peeking from buds. However, this isn’t the only stage of progress; growth is a tough and timely process. A seed is positioned in the dark first. I wonder if it can feel the weight of the dirt above its head, as I do at times. Does it know, in those dark moments, its roots are extending? Can it sense being slowly pushed toward the surface? When rain falls and the soil is drenched, I wonder if the seed believes it is drowning. Does it know the water will bring life and strength?
For this vulnerable seed, I wonder if minutes feel like weeks, days, or decades, as it waits to feel the sun. When it is underground, does it know the sun exists, or is it just using its energy and focus to extend a root a little further and reach a little higher? It must be hard work. How long will it take? Every seed grows in its own time. In the end, the seed will spread its growing roots and a stem will form, standing strong, using all of the nutrients it has been given. One day, it may grow a centimeter, another day an inch. There are patterns, but no one can predict growth perfectly.
In our own lives, we may feel like the seed, still waiting and working to break through the heaviness above us. Or perhaps we are in a season of joy, blessing, and contentment, noticing sprouts, buds, and beautiful flowers all around us. Wherever we are in this growing journey, we are reminded God is causing the growth. Our Holy Gardener is actively nourishing and working the land in our lives. Our joys, sorrows, questions, and decisions are in His trustworthy timing.
May the Lord Bless You and Keep You:
In whatever season you find yourself today, may you have an overwhelming sense of God’s timing and peace.
If you are in darkness, the dirt weighing heavy above you, may you trust that work is happening beneath the surface.
If you are stretching and growing in the light of the sun, may you use the Son’s energy to create energy, nourishment, and beauty to share with others.
