I am a Community-Builder

“Forming community goes straight to the heart of what makes our work so rewarding: It is where connection and joy lay.” ~ Elena Aguilar

Our classroom communities are sacred spaces. “Community” is a common word that circulates as the school year begins. We are engaging in social-emotional learning conversations and framing our classroom routines, and yet, in all the busyness, we may forget to slow down and reflect on what authentic community means and how it feels. Let’s take a moment to do this together. Feel free to jot down some notes as we consider these questions:

  • What does community look like to you?

  • When have you been a part of a healthy, encouraging community?

  • What characteristics or actions were foundational in building this group and space?

We have been given a rich task of creating the space for strengthening friendships, developing respect, and recognizing the dignity and value within each person. There may be students who have never experienced being a part of a healthy group that is dedicated to their progress and potential. We have an opportunity to make this a reality in their lives. What a powerful opportunity this is!

May God richly bless your space of learning and all who step into it.

May connections be formed and values respected.

May strengths be uplifted and growth inspired.

May every person who enters feel seen and valued for who they are.

And may you be blessed to build this strong community.
