Cultivating Connection
“Cultivate”
To prepare for the raising of crops
To loosen or break up the soil
To foster growth
To improve by labor, care, or study
The first several days and weeks of a school year is a season of cultivation. We, as educators and mentors, are intentional in creating a space for learning and growth. We prepare to raise and uplift those in our care. This preparation involves loosening what was: habits formed, expectations of perfection, and preconceived notions of what will be. We foster growth by ensuring our soil (the culture of our classroom) is full of rich nutrients. And we work intently, care unconditionally, and study curiously to push ourselves and our students towards growth.
What does cultivation look like in your learning space?
What habits or preconceived ideas are loosening for yourself or your students?
How are rich nutrients being shared and absorbed in your classroom community?
Do you feel like the gardener, working intently to cultivate a space full of potential?
Or do you feel more like the seed waiting for nourishment, warmth, and growth?
Or perhaps a blending of both?
