With Intention

With the start of a new school year comes the invitation to be intentional. We are in the midst of a season of intentional planning. The groundwork we are laying in the first weeks of school is incredibly valuable in shaping the atmosphere of our learning spaces. As we balance the many responsibilities in front of us, be it professional or personal, the tasks seem to quickly and subtly multiply. How do we catch our breath, regain focus, and maintain intentionality in our practice? We have written the lists, prioritized calendars, sacrificed precious moments, and sought wisdom.

I won’t pretend I have the answer to this question; however, a perspective which has grounded me is consistent reflection on why I began my calling to teach and who I am called to serve. If we, as teachers, got together and shared our whys and whos, my prediction is that a majority of us would agree that our purpose is to be present for our students.

Bringing this purpose into focus, we can ask: Which responsibilities bring a direct, positive impact to our learners? Of course, there will always be necessary logistical tasks, but we can choose to limit the emotional energy we invest in these. Then, as we plan and prepare for the beginning of our school year,  we can find freedom in developing intentionality, using our time and talents for what truly matters: the students in our midst.
