Somebody
“I gave my students a saying to say: ‘I am somebody. I was somebody when I came, I’ll be a better somebody when I leave. I am powerful, and I am strong. I deserve the education that I get here.” ~ Rita Pierson
In our reflections together, we often consider our students and those around us. This is important because we are called to be in service to others. However, today I would like to start with you. Do you feel like somebody today? When you step into your workspace, are you treated as somebody? I hope the answer is, “yes,” with examples of encouragement and validation coming to your mind, but I know this may not be a reality for you at this time.
Just so you hear it from someone today: You are incredibly important. There has never been a YOU before, and there never will be again. You were designed exactly as you are. You are here for a purpose. The way others treat you, whether intentionally or subconsciously, in no way measures your worth. You are important and of value just by being you.
Now, let’s focus on those around us. How powerful would it be if, regardless of how we are viewed or treated, we chose to treat everybody like a somebody. No matter what. Period. Our students, colleagues, and leaders deserve dignity and appreciation of their humanity. Today, be the powerful spark that ignites a shifting atmosphere all around you.
