I Am Proactive

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” ~ Matthew 6:33-34 (NIV)

In Stephen Covey’s popular book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” the first habit he outlines is: Be Proactive. He discusses the difference between being proactive and reactive. In other words, how do we handle the expected or unexpected challenges that show up in our day? Do we feel anxious and out of control, or are we able to maintain calm and stay grounded?

Perhaps, our reflection verses do not seem to accurately parallel the theme of being proactive. After all, proactive means to think ahead, right? And yet, we read, Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. If we understand proactivity as setting ourselves up for emotional success by not becoming derailed every time something unexpected happens, then we need to dig deeper than our to-do lists and perfect lesson plans.

The proactive part of these verses is: Seek first His kingdom. It may sound simple and overstated; however, I believe when we are nourished by God’s Word and communicate with Him consistently, there are proactive outcomes we may not even anticipate! We make decisions with more clarity. We show more authentic compassion to those around us. Above all, we remain grounded in our purpose and calling.

May the Lord Bless You and Keep You:

May you enter your space of calling with a trusting spirit.

May you begin today centered on Christ’s love and provision for you.

When interruptions occur, may you have a spirit of patience and gracious understanding.

May you be proactive in seeking Jesus above all else.

And may you have the discipline to take it one day at a time, committing the future to God.
