I am Named
As you know, last school year it was my mission to write and publish a devotional resource for teachers. It is such a blessing to know that hundreds of teachers around the country are reading “Called to the Classroom: Daily Reflections for Educators” as they begin this year of learning! As I normally begin the school year the day after Labor Day, last Tuesday I decided to join other teachers and start the book. Every school day, I am reading one reflection. On Mondays, I would like to share the devotional reflection for that day. Today, we are on Day #5: I am Named.
“But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you. O Israel, the one who formed you says, ‘Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you, I have called you by name; you are mine.” ~ Isaiah 43:1 (NLT)
A practice in many classroom communities is a morning greeting. Whether this takes place by a teacher welcoming each student with a friendly, “Good morning!” in the hallway, or a meeting time when each student greets one another, a common theme is the use of names. The teacher greets the students by name. The students greet each other by name. In doing so, all participants feel seen, known, included, and loved.
Consider how it feels when we recognize Jesus calls us by our own name. We are seen, known, included, and unconditionally loved in His Kingdom. When we embrace this truth of belonging to our Heavenly Father - a child in His family - we are able to authentically embrace our students, the children God has called us to unconditionally love. We accept this gift with open arms so we may, in turn, open our arms to those around us.
Today, I invite you to reflect on your own name and identity in Christ. When you feel comfortable, express the following statements by inserting your name in the blank. (You may want to speak this out loud, say it in a whisper, or hold it closely in your heart.)
God, my Heavenly Father, speaks these words over me:
I have created you in My image, _______ .
I have formed you exactly as you are. Do not be afraid, ________ , for I am with you.
I have called you by name, _______ . You are mine
As you greet and gather today, may God share His perspective of His children with you.
May you cherish one another as unique, loved beings, designed in the image of Christ.
May you welcome those around you by name.
And may you step forward in the confidence that you are claimed and called. You are His.
