The Importance of Reflection

In the month of May, we are focusing on the practice of reflection. But when you’re exhausted and running on all the fumes you have left, why is it important to prioritize reflection? How can you add one more thing - one more idea - to your sweet, tired mind at the end of a long school year?

I believe reflection is the process through which people make meaning in life. Whether you pause for a moment in the busy, loud classroom to notice a joyful student, or you carve out time to write about an experience. The way you practice reflection will be what you need it to be in the space and time you have.

The most important thing is to be aware. To look back and find gratitude for the moments you’ve had this year. To look around you now and consider the beautiful parts of life that you may miss in a month or a year or a decade. To look forward, content in the knowledge that you didn’t take these seasons for granted.

This school year brought many joyful times for you, and also, most likely, some heartbreaking moments as well. These are all experiences that take up space in your mind and heart and are, therefore, worthy of your reflection. This is how we find a sense of closure. This is where we find peace. This is how we make meaning.
