Intentional Moments

I remember a few years ago, being in my first month or two of the school year and already feeling exhausted and worn out. I was disappointed that I already felt this way when I wanted to still be enthusiastic and full of energy for my students. I was sharing my frustrations with my sister, who is a veteran teacher. She shared some advice I have used ever since. She told me when she experiences days that feel overwhelming and it’s hard to feel the beauty that comes with teaching children, she picks one thing to implement in her school day that brings her joy with students.

Here are some examples that I have used ever since she shared this idea with me:

  • I pick out a read-aloud book that I love. Of course, I love it because it’s the one that kids absolutely adore too! It may not meet a particular standard, and my only purpose for reading might be “for the fun of it,” but it puts a smile on my face, captures the students’ attention, and brings a relaxed tone to the room.

  • I play my favorite kid-friendly song during a clean-up time. Maybe I even dance a little bit.

  • I take 5 minutes to play a quick game with students. Everyone needs brain breaks. I try to pick one that will be very simple to introduce and will involve everyone.

  • I take some time out of my Morning Meeting to teach my students a song.

  • Throughout the day, I sporadically ask students if they have a joke to share. Whether or not it’s funny, I laugh!

If you’d like to try this idea, your “intentional joy moments” will be unique to you and your students. I hope you have fun with it and this practice invites opportunities to connect with your students in a deeper way.
