Intentional Gratitude
“It’s a funny thing about life, once you begin to take note of the things you are grateful for, you begin to lose sight of the things that you lack.” ~Germany Kent
Have you ever met someone who is always thankful? It just seems to be a part of who they are - as if they were born that way and it’s a part of their DNA, right? I admire those people! For the rest of the world, we may need to be a little more intentional when it comes to gratitude. Thankfulness is simultaneously a skill and a gift. In our last reflection, we explored the importance of creating physical and mental space for gratitude in our lives. This is the first impactful step in our journey of inviting gratitude.
Another way to welcome the positive impacts of gratitude is by being mindful in the midst of our day. Do you often feel stressed, frustrated, or anxious? Do you find yourself stuck or in a waiting season, feeling slightly out of place? Do you find joy and inspiration in the beautiful moments? In any of these situations, you can intentionally practice gratitude.
As an example, I’ll share a brief story. On a particularly challenging school day, I felt like I was at the end of my rope. I had no more energy to give and no more solutions to develop. I just wanted to go home and not come back the next day. I hated this feeling, but didn’t know how to pull myself to a better place. Finally, I put a sticky note on my clipboard and quickly listed one through five down the side of it as I walked around my classroom. I decided to fill this list with things I’m thankful for about my job by the time the students left for the day. I did it. And while it didn’t solve all the issues that needed to be addressed, it allowed my mind to take a break from focusing on the challenges and instead look intently for the positive things. Because they were there all along.
