I Am Simple
“Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples - when they see the love you have for each other.” ~ John 13:34-35 (MSG)
Our reflection verses today highlight an impactful moment in Jesus’ ministry. Jesus had just finished washing His disciples’ feet, a surprising demonstration of humility and service. After this, He alludes to the events which will soon unfold, exposing the betrayal of their companion, Judas, who then abruptly departs, leaving lingering questions with the remaining disciples. Can we imagine the nervous confusion building in that “Last Supper” room? All of this was leading up to the most chaotic, emotionally taxing time in Jesus’ ministry. Yet, this is when Jesus chooses to focus on the most important thing. In an instant, He simplifies everything for His friends: Love one another.
Sometimes, we may inadvertently create obstacles in our own path of simplicity. It is easy and habitual to get caught up in the details of life. We attempt to balance so many responsibilities, find answers to questions, and solve problems relying on our own strength. We may experience seasons when we feel overwhelmed and are left with lingering questions for God and His plan. Earlier in this chapter, Jesus told Peter, “You don’t understand now what I’m doing, but it will be clear enough to you later” (John 13:7 MSG). Perhaps this is a reminder we need to hear today as well.
Jesus simplifies everything for us when He says: Love one another. He does not dismiss or condemn our distracted efforts. He simply invites a different way of thinking: the freedom to love the person in front of us, next to us, or across the world from us. On certain days, we may need to hear permission to simply and extravagantly love the way Christ loves us. This is how everyone will recognize we are His disciples - when we love one another.
May the Lord Bless You and Keep You:
Today, may you feel Jesus’ love for you in a personal way.
May this Love enter into every part of who you are, simplifying your words and actions.
May the Holy Spirit fill your mind with clarity, focusing on the most important purpose:
May you love one another.
