I Am An Advocate
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The word, “advocate,” is used several times in the New Testament to describe either the Holy Spirit or Jesus. Originally, this word was written in Greek as, “parakletos.” Parakletos can be translated as either “advocate” or “comforter.” Someone who is described in this way pleads another’s cause, helping them by defending or comforting.
Have you ever felt targeted or under attack? Working with students, families, and communities, we may feel extremely scrutinized or be at the receiving end of accusation. In these moments, do you feel supported and advocated for? Whether your answer is yes or no, take a moment to reflect on how this feels.
Now, I invite you to breathe in a powerful breath as you read these next words: Jesus Christ - through whom God defeated death and who loves you unconditionally - is your Advocate. You are not on trial in front of Him. He takes the stand for you. And because the Holy Spirit lives within you, you are empowered to be an advocate for others as well. Look around your space of Holy learning today. Do your students feel targeted or under attack? Perhaps God has called you to be here for such a time as this to defend and comfort them.
May the Lord Bless You and Keep You:
May you take strong steps today, confident in God’s undefeated advocacy.
When the enemy seems to be closing in with accusations and shame, may you boldly proclaim Jesus Christ is with you and standing for you.
May you have eyes to see the hurt and the needs around you.
Empowered by the Holy Spirit, may you have the courage to stand up and speak up for those treated unjustly.
