Eugene Cho

“Our calling is not simply to change the world, but perhaps as important, our calling is to be changed ourselves.” ~ Rev. Eugene Cho

As we are focusing on stories in February, I am highlighting another author I quoted in, “Called to the Classroom: Daily Reflections for Educators.” (In fact, if you are following along with us on the daily readings, I use this author’s quote in today’s reflection: Day #118.) Rev. Eugene Cho is a current inspirational figure who demonstrates compassion and activism in many areas.

Eugene Cho, a Korean-American pastor, activist, and author, is celebrated for his profound dedication to social justice and community empowerment. Born in Incheon, South Korea, Cho immigrated with his family to the United States as a child. His upbringing in a diverse environment cultivated a deep sense of empathy and a commitment to serving others. After completing his theological studies, Cho embarked on a journey to use his faith as a catalyst for positive change. Throughout his career, he has tirelessly advocated for issues such as poverty alleviation, racial reconciliation, and global humanitarian efforts.

For me, the most memorable part about Reverend Cho is his response to challenges. I believe his view on life is truly reflected by his quote included in this reflection: “Our calling is not simply to change the world, but perhaps as important, our calling is to be changed ourselves.” For example, after witnessing firsthand the malnutrition and lack of access to healthy food in so many places around the world, Eugene started a non-partisan advocacy organization called “Bread for the World” (and “Bread Institute”). This organization urges national and global leaders to participate in ending hunger, both in the U.S. and around the world.

If you are interested in learning more about Rev. Eugene Cho’s story, you will find several other organizations he has spearheaded in response to extreme difficulties he has witnessed. Through his writings, speaking engagements, and grassroots activism, he continues to inspire countless individuals to pursue justice and embody love in action. His example invites me to dream big when it comes to the challenges I witness, remembering that one person can make a significant impact if we risk being changed for the sake of our calling.
