Change-Agent

“Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest you.” ~ Mother Teresa

I hesitated to include this quote in our reflection for today, because telling an audience of teachers to never worry about numbers feels unrealistic! We know that the student to teacher ratio is high, and it feels like our students are entering the classroom with more and more needs every day. How are we supposed to navigate this? How can we not worry about the numbers!

We have so many expectations placed on our shoulders, it can feel exhausting to even try to create a plan of how we can do it all. We brainstorm and research and prepare in the attempt to meet every need for every student all while fulfilling our other responsibilities. For some it may get to the point where we hesitate to keep trying because we know we will never accomplish all we are expected to do. We are swimming upstream.

And then a slow, small breath of air invites its way into our lungs, reminding us that it’s just one step after another. Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest you. We don’t have to have everything figured out to make a difference and be excellent teachers. We are change-agents for the community and culture of our workspaces by making the intentional decision to do the next right thing in love. Today, we will most likely be near a lot of people. Help one person at a time, perhaps beginning with you.
