Celebration Countdown

“The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.”

~ Oprah Winfrey

Do you participate in a form of countdown as you end your school year? Perhaps your school or class has some sort of method to celebrate the final days of the year. Or is your mentality a “business as usual” atmosphere until the final days and hours? For many students, this consistency feels safe and secure.

In either case, I’d like to invite you to engage in a personal countdown as you end the school year. It may have been an incredibly joyful or unbearably challenging school year for you. As you near the end, you deserve to take space and time to process what this year has held and how you are feeling about it. This reflection can look however you need it to in your day. Here are some ideas if you’d like a starting point:

  • Make a Top 5 List of memories from this year you want to make sure you remember

  • Begin a Celebration Countdown, writing one thing from each day to celebrate

  • Create a Check-In Countdown, each day reflecting on how you feel or the joys and concerns you are managing. (Sometimes giving these shifting emotions room on a page allows us to let go of the tension just a bit.)

  • Create a countdown with your students or colleagues, focusing on celebrating the positives of this year - your strength and determination, student successes, etc.
